US Sailboat show at Annapolis wrap up

Annapolis ShowAs you know LateSail's team exhibited at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland. Attendance was way up and the show had its fourth largest attendance in 40 years. Vendors and exhibitors did very well this year with sales and bookings of charters exceeding expectations. Our team signed up lots of new customers and got a chance to meet many of our current customers.

Fall Crewed Yacht Shows

The LateSail team also traveled to St. Thomas and Tortola to attend the Fall Crewed Yacht shows held every Fall. This was a gathering of between 75 and 100 of the finest crewed yachts, both sailing and motor yachts that are offered in the Virgin Islands.Meeting the crews and inspecting their boats gives the LateSail team another valuable offering for customers who are looking for fully crewed, all inclusive charters. There is a wide variety of sizes and types of crewed yachts in the Virgin Islands. The costs for these vacations is comparable to a bareboat vacation after all the extras are added to a bareboat charter. LateSail will be adding crewed yacht special offers on our website, along with other exciting additions. More about this in the December newsletter.
 Destinations

St MartinThis month's destination is St. Martin. This is another one of the many great locales that is best visited with snow mounting in your drive way. Direct flights to St. Martin from the U.S. are easy to come by.

St. Martin is located in the northern Leeward Islands southeast of the USVI and BVI. This area is also extremely popular with American charter clients due to it's accessibility to the United States. The island is separated into two sections. The Dutch section in the south and the French section in the north. Phillipsburg is the capital of Dutch, Sint Maarten and offers duty free shopping, casinos and nightlife. Marigot is the largest port in the French sector. St. Martin is considered a Level 1 sailing area.

Juliana International Airport is the main airport on St Martin and has daily flights to the main cities of the world. The airport is located on the south part of the island near Simpson Bay.

Facts - U.S. dollar and Euros are the acceptable currency, however many places accept $1 to €1 making U.S. dollars the favourable choice. Both English and French are widely spoken. Popular islands nearby include Anguilla, St Barth, St Kitts and Nevis

Marinas and Harbors- Major marinas in St. Martin include Marigot Port La Royale (Marigot), Marigot Fort Luis (Marigot), Simpson Bay (South side of the island), Ansel Marcel (North side of the island), Oyster Pond (East side on the border of French and Dutch sections).

Weather - The weather is tropical with very little temperature variation between seasons. The average yearly air temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and sea surface temperature 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The total average yearly rainfall is 39 inches. Autumn is wetter, but showers are generallyshort and taper off quickly. St Martin is subject to the trade winds off the Atlantic Ocean and you can experience winds upwards of 20 knots for several days. Summer months see winds from 10 to 20 knots.
107Chartering 101

We receive many questions regarding the what, where, why, when and how to charter when talking to clients. This section will discuss chartering including terminology, procedures, regulations, etc. This month we will discuss some of the licensing aspects of chartering.

Licensing, Certification and Resumes - There is much confusion concerning the requirements for bareboat chartering. Each operator has their own requirements and due to insurance, some charter areas may have more stringent requirements.
In the U.S., the licensing agency is the United States Coast Guard. These licenses called Merchant Mariners licenses come with a variety of requirements and stipulations and are required to operate commercial vessels.
Certificates are offered by sailing schools around the world and are a great way to learn and sharpen your sailing skills. These certificates are widely accepted as proof of competency depending on the level achieved.
Sailing Resumes are also required by charter companies, especially if no license or certificate has been obtained. This resume will describe your sailing experience and sailing competency so charter companies can allow you to charter their boat without a captain. It is beneficial to keep a log of all your sails, so you can compile a complete resume of your time on the water.

Sailing Schools - Many charter companies rank sailing areas due to the weather, currents, sailing distances, availability of anchorages, etc. Level 1 is the easiest and Level 3 the hardest. You will need to provide additional sailing experience or certification to sail in the higher level areas. There are two organizations that offer sailing certification in the United.States.
One is ASA, the American Sailing Association. They offer ten different levels ranging from Basic Sailing to Offshore Passage Making. The first three levels, ASA 101 (Basic Keelboat), ASA 103 (Coastal Cruising) and ASA 104 (Bareboat Chartering) are the certificates generally accepted by most chartering companies. ASA also offers some endorsements including docking, radar and weather that may come in handy. ASA is offering a new International Proficiency Certificate for those who charter in the Mediterranean.
The second organization is U.S. Sailing. They offer Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising and Basic Bareboat courses also. U.S. Sailing offers many advanced courses in addition to the basic courses listed above.

NOTE: In Croatia, a VHF Radio License is required and there are numerous organizations listed on the web that can assist you in obtaining one. A course in basic coastal navigation, offered by both organizations above, is great addition to your sailing resume and should be considered by all sailors.
