The island of Rhodes, shaped like the head of a spear at one time was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the Colossus of Rhodes – until an earthquake in 226 BC brought down these great symbols of wealth. This unique sailing area lies just off the coast of Turkey and is home to some of the most beautiful islands in Greece. Discover Simi’s picturesque harbour, the famous monastery of St. John on Patmos, the dormant volcano on Niseros, Kalimnos, home of the sponge divers, and Samos, once home to Pythagoras, where the main town is named in his honour. The longer passages and weather conditions make this the perfect holiday for those seeking exhilarating sailing.

In the summer the prevailing wind is the meltemi blowing from a North-West direction at Force 4-6. In Spring and Autumn the wind is less strong and blows from the South-East. Gusts are particularly strong off Patmos, Kalymnos, Kos, Nissyros, Tilos, Karpathos and Astypalea. In the comparatively open stretch of sea between Astypalea and Karpathos a large and distributed sea is set up when the meltemi blows for days on end. Although it is possible to go N when the meltemi is blowing, it makes better sense to plan to be heading S in July and August. Temperatures in the summer can reach 35 degrees Celsius.

This location is better for intermediate or advanced sailors.

There are charter flights to Kos and Rhodes from London Gatwick, Manchester and regional airports on Wednesdays, and from Gatwick and Manchester on Saturdays. Low cost airlines also fly to Rhodes.
