Delve into Italy’s Pontine, Aeolian and Egadi Islands

The three must-sail archipelagos

8th May 2018

Our partner, Spartivento Group, with 20 years’ experience sailing the Italian Mediterranean, has given us the lowdown on two special sailing destinations, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast.

The timeless charm of Capri and the Pontine Islands

From Naples airport, you can easily reach the marinas in the Bay of Naples. Our new base in Salerno, Marina d’Arechi, is in magnificent surroundings, just a few nautical miles from the real core of the Amalfi Coast. We’ve got 1,000 anchorages for boats, making it the biggest marina in the Mediterranean Sea.

Millenniums of history and tradition spread through the shores and cities of Middle Italy. Sail from Salerno along the coast with its UNESCO-protected Cilento National Park. Head across the Tyrrhenian Sea to marvel at Capri’s iconic Faraglioni, three limestone stacks that rise up out of the sea on the southern coast or the blue grotto.

Hop to Ischia with its pine forest and thermal springs, as well as tiny Procida with its brightly coloured houses. Sail onwards to the Pontine Islands uninhabited archipelago of Ponza, Zannone and Ventotene. Ponza is a good spot for swimming and Zannone is a nature reserve.

Explore the ancient towns of the Amalfi Coast, as well as the heavenly beaches of Atrani, Amalfi and Positano. You’ll find ideal moorings and small town centers with the finest shopping, handicraft boutiques and impressive restaurants. From here you can also sail down to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands.

The Aeolian and Egadi Islands’ endless possibilities

Set sail for the Sicily and the nearby Aeolian Islands and archipelago with eight islands, one to explore for every day of a seven-night charter. In high season, these UNESCO-protected islands are popular with Italian visitors and you might even spot a few celebrities.

Sail around windy Stromboli with its active volcano that last erupted in 2009, or Vulcano, another island with volcanic activity. Admire Lipari’s natural beaches, Spiaggia Bianca and Canneto, pumice industry and its wonderful old town. Find beauty on Panarea with its nature reserve and Junco Cove beach before dining at a typical Italian restaurant. Visit the delights of Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi and Basiluzzo within this exciting island group too.

From the east to the western coast, Sicily is a deep dive into flavours and breathless sceneries. Our new base in Trapani–Marina di Levante connects to the inland treasures of Taormina, a hilly town near Mount Etna, the ancient port city of Catania and Siracusa on the Ionian coast.

If you want to get away from it all, sail to the Egadi Islands’ archipelago that includes Favignana with its beautiful bay of Cala Rossa, Marettimo’s panoramic mountain paths and Levanzo’s peaceful ambience. Nearby you can cruise along Sicily’s coast and the jewels of Palermo, Cefalù and San Vito Lo Capo.
