LateSail works with all the major charter fleets worldwide, and we are excited to introduce the guest blog below from one of our longest standing fleets, Horizon Yacht Charters, who have years of first hand knowledge; living, working and sailing in Grenada. So we thought we’d ask them to share why they think Grenada is a “can’t miss” destination to sail…
Whenever asked to list the reasons for making our base in Grenada the answer is simple – there are 100,000 of them ………the people.
‘Good Morning’, ‘Good Evening’, ‘How you doing’, ‘Thank You’, ‘Enjoy’ is still the most common currency on this small island. Whether you are in the International Class Marina of Port Louis in the South or buying barbeque chicken from a stall on rugged Bathway Beach in the North, you will be greeted with smiles ……and asked the question ‘How you enjoying our island?’ Grenadians have a huge pride in their home and an equally huge desire for visitors to love it too – an emotion that is infectious – no wonder it is said that Grenada jus’ get under your skin!
And this is just the start. It goes without saying that the island has excellent sailing waters; secluded coves for quiet anchorage; beautiful beaches; full service marinas and haul out facilities; restaurants and bars. But let us take you to the ‘Heart’ ……. An experience of Pure Grenada for you at the beginning or end of your yacht charter. How about a short sail into Clarke’s Court Bay & a stop at Hog Island for cold beers and barbeque at Roger’s Bar, joined by locals, live-aboard cruisers and visiting ‘yachties’. Or how about a live music session at The Flying Jib in Calliste, with great views across Point Salines, the most southerly tip of the island. Buy fresh local produce, fruit, juices, preserves and honey at the friendly Farmer’s Market in Grand Anse and then try the best mojitos at Esther’s Bar, just a walk away on the beach. If the timing is right, you could also enjoy a dinghy concert in Clarke’s Court Bay or a Full Moon Bonfire Party in Benji Bay. The list can go on……
The natural beauty of the island is a must to experience as well. There are hiking trails throughout the rain forested interior and shorter walks that will take you to waterfalls and sulphur pools. If you don’t want to walk alone there are local guides who can show you the way and keep you entertained with ‘colourful’ anecdotes about the area and its history. You can also contact the Hash House Harriers, a group that sets walking (& running) trails every Saturday at different locations throughout Grenada and its sister islands of Carriacou & Petite Martinique – a great way to explore and make new friends.
Should your schedule allow, there are Turtle-Watch tours on Levera Beach in the north of the island; kayak trips around the mangroves and bays of the south-east coast and glass bottom boat & snorkelling excursions to the underwater sculpture park in Moliniere on the western coast. The team at Horizon Yacht Charters have a wealth of knowledge and experience to make sure that an itinerary can be designed to suit everyone and that the best use is made of precious time.
Oh and did we mention that Grenada is the southern gateway to The Grenadines, renowned as one of the most beautiful cruising areas in the world? Reason 100,001!
