17th Mar 2020

The south coast of the UK offers a beautiful sailing environment and is a favourite of keen sailors, racers and boating enthusiasts looking for a week’s charter or weekend escape.

With steady winds, so much nautical history and lots of convenient well-equipped ports, it’s worth considering making a getaway to this hotspot on the British coastline.

Shanklin beach Isle of Wight

Cast off for your first day of sailing on the stunning Solent. Moor at one of the many places in the sailing capital of the UK – Cowes – and stop for lunch at one of the fantastic seafood restaurants. Later in the day, head east, onward to Bembridge

Spend some time exploring the local beaches and maybe even head to Culver Down – a sweeping headland with spectacular views along to Sandown and Shanklin.

Isle of Wight
Sailing around the Isle of Wight

Leave early and continue north from Bembridge, sailing the 22 miles west around the Isle of Wight to Yarmouth

Sail past the beaches at Ryde, the village of Fishbourne and Newtown Nature Reserve before mooring at Yarmouth Harbour.

Lake Pier, Poole Harbour

Head west from the Isle of Wight and get in some memorable sailing on the open waters between the Isle of Wight and Isle of Purbeck.

Arrive in the glamourous area of Sandbanks, berth at Sandbanks or Salterns and spend an evening at anchor watching the sun go down.

Old Harry Rocks
The Old Harry Rocks near Swanage

Sail south from Poole along the picturesque coastline of Studland and Swanage, sailing past the Old Harry Rocks. On the way, you could stop at the popular Studland Beach and go for a swim, if you’re lucky enough to have some hot weather!

The famous rounded bay of Lulworth Cove makes for a lovely overnight stop. Why not take a 1 mile walk over to Durdle Door to watch the sun set and then on the way back, head to the 400 year old Lulworth Cove Inn for dinner.

Hurst Spit
Hurst Spit, Lymington

We recommend setting off early for this long passage over to the New Forest port town of Lymington.

A gateway to the western Solent, Lymington lies in a great position and is a lovely stopover for cruisers in the summer season.

Finish your yacht charter with a slow, ambling day exploring quaint Beaulieu and nearby Buckler’s Hard – the 18th century shipbuilding village that built three ships which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Beaulieu has a few nice cafes and restaurants where you can take a relaxing lunch stop before finishing your holiday after your final leg to Hamble.

In partnership with our operators, we can offer the following charter types from the south coast:

Plenty of boats are available from our partners at Port Hamble Marina. Here is a selection of boats available:
